About 30 senior academic posts are to be axed under plans by a university to merge two departments.
The HRI facility at Wellesbourne, which includes plant and environmental science work, is losing £2m a year, the University of Warwick said.
The facility will merge with the biological sciences department and they will share a site on the main campus.
The two departments have 89 senior academic posts, a figure which would be reduced to 55 to 60.
But the university said it did not know what the timescale would be for this to happen.
A spokesman said it intended to maintain activity at Wellesbourne until at least 2012 and some facilities might be retained after that.
He said: “There are natural synergies between the two departments.
“We want to continue to do the best research in life sciences, but it has to be sustainable.”
